Kamloops Kicks Back
Way back nestled in the hills beside the Thompson river, riders from near and far gathered to do battle and have some fun in the dirt. With the track ripped open and the sprinklers prepping the earth for perfection, Saturday morning couldn’t come fast enough! Saturday was a practice day for all class of riders to learn the new track layout that Whispering Pines (Kamloops) was offering. This was a perfect opportunity for us to get some testing done, and that’s just what we did. Business time, forks on, forks off, swapping shocks and changing chassis to get closer to that perfect set-up; the set-up we need. A that’s exactly what we did. With huge leaps forward every time we went out on the track, the crew had the bike expertly dialed and ready to do battle on Sunday.
As Round 2 of the MCQMX BC south series got underway Sunday morning, the Pro-AM event was the 7th race up. Perfect conditions and some incredible track prep brought many line choices and set the stage for some great battles. With a second place start on our Cycleworks Foothills Yamaha 450 we were in the mix to challenge for the lead. Following closely and scouting some alternate lines, we waited for about a lap and a half to make our move. Up the inside with a great drive down the sandy straightaway, we were able to grab the lead and put our head down. The race was going great, feeling better with every jump and turn and learning more about this amazing track with each passing lap. It felt like it was time to drop the hammer. We started to pull on 2nd place but just 2 laps from the finish flag, I heard an unusual but familiar sound warning me to shut it down. Begrudgingly, with our bike singing to a different tune (not in a good way) we made the gut-wrenching decision to save what we could of the bike and relinquished our lead. We pulled off the track and retired from the event with a mechanical DNF.
We certainly felt great at this Kamloops track and made leaps and bounds with set-up this
weekend, but I guess sometimes it just doesn’t work out. This is just another element of racing and a variable that can affect any team at anytime. With this mechanical failure we will learn and grow as a team as we push weekend by weekend closer to the Canadian Rockstar Nationals starting in June. It’s been fun, now we will regroup, and be ready to charge round 3 of the MCQMX series next weekend at Popkum MX track. See you there!!
